Survey of court observers

In February 2026, Judith Townend (this network’s co-convenor) and Daniel Clark (a member of this network) began a one-year project, “Making Justice Visible”, at the University of Sussex. A strand of that project involves the creation of a jurisdictional guide to court observation, alongside the collection of data about transparency in the courts and tribunals system of England and Wales.

To assist this research, we’ve launched a survey of court observers. If you are over 18 and have observed a court or tribunal in England and Wales at any point over the last year, we’d like to hear from you. Notwithstanding the different rules about access to this jurisdiction, people who have observed the family court are also encouraged to participate.

You can access the survey by copying the following URL into your browser: https://universityofsussex.eu.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_4Jv26v3sAuJ91Z4

Further information, including how to contact the research team, can be found in the information sheet at the start of the survey. The survey is currently due to close on Wednesday 30 September 2026.
