Coroners investigate deaths that “are deemed to be unnatural, violent, or where the cause is unknown”. Inquests are generally held in open court so that the public and press can attend. The Bench Book has some guidance for considerations of open justice during inquests, including “inquests in writing” (that is, without a hearing).
